An explanation of the Application Information (Appinfo) service in Windows 7.

What does the Application Information (Appinfo) service do?

The application information service is responsible for giving a program elevated (administrative) privileges so that it can be installed.

APPLICATION INFORMATION (APPINFO) SERVICE DETAILS

  • Service name: Appinfo
  • Description: Facilitates the running of interactive applications with additional administrative privileges. If this service is stopped, users will be unable to launch applications with the additional administrative privileges they may require to perform desired user tasks.
  • Path to executable: C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
  • Startup type: Manual

Does my computer need the Application Information (Appinfo) service?

Your computer does need the application information service. If it’s disabled, you won’t be able to install software.

SHOULD I DISABLE THE APPLICATION INFORMATION (APPINFO) SERVICE?

First off, I have to say that it’s best to leave service optimization up to Microsoft. With that said; if you never intend to install software, drivers, or other services, you can disable this service. I highly recommend leaving the application information service alone though.
